Yet what reader hasn’t had her mind expanded, her heart plucked, her conscience stirred by a nonfiction book? The responsibility the writers of such books take on, to arrange the facts of the world into a form that makes sense of its tumult, can produce in the reader a kind of clarity of thought that no other genre can match. It can be easy to dismiss these forms as the worthwhile but fundamentally unliterary assemblage of facts into paragraphs.
While memoir has gained a foothold in the literary conversation, narrative and reported nonfiction tend to be ignored. Try it, because you don't have anything to lose, if it doesn't work you are no worse of than before but I would suggest having some willpower on standby.In the work of canon-building, nonfiction tends to get short shrift. I started it full of hope because I really did want to quit (which I think helps) but mostly the book annoyed me with the constant repetitions of the same points over and over again. This required more than a little willpower on my behalf though despite reading this. Don't get me wrong I have successfully given up smoking for over a month now and do not miss it in the slightest any more. I personally did not find it the miracle cure that others have and that it claims to be. The book is cheaper than a packet of cigs and what do you have to lose? There is one caveat - you need to want to stop smoking - or at least have considered it to take embrace the approach from Allen. This book does something to your brain and it is by far the best way to stop. Whenever i see a smoker I am grossed out, whenever I smell it I find it disgusting. The book flipped my perception on smoking and now I cannot believe I smoked those dirty, stinking roll ups for nearly 20 years.

I’ve been smoke free since July 2018 and could never be more happy or proud of myself. However, I finished those 60 pages and at the end pledged I’d never touch a cigarette again.
Instead of going to buy more - I had realised I was already a non smoker and didn’t bother buying more (despite the book telling me to smoke to the end) I was coming to the end of the book, I had 60 pages left and had run out of tobacco. June 2018 I picked the book back up and read each page, with great attention and absorbed each word on each page. I also hid from my family that I had started smoking again. I continued smoking for a year after I failed the first time. I read the book first time round, but I’m not sure I took the book and it’s contents in properly - I’m putting that down to my poor attention span and my desire to stop smoking as quickly as possible. I also smoke other stuff and with that I never thought I would be able to stop smoking tobacco all together. I smoked Roll ups without the filter and would say I was a medium to heavy smoker. I’ve been a smoker since I was 18, now 37.
